Mid-City began as swampland between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. In the 1800s, as canals like the Bayou St. John and the New Basin Canal were dug, the area slowly drained and developed. By the early 1900's it became a working-class neighborhood, home to streetcars, corner stores, and shotgun houses. Jazz and R&B flowed through the area. Mid-City still keeps that local, laid-back vibe-where second lines roll past porches, and history lives in every brick and beat.
